How to Create Boundaries At Work for Career Success

Despite popular opinion, those that thrive in their careers and generally in life, don’t actually do more.. They do less! They focus on what matters, and prioritize ruthlessly.

If I have learned anything from working with the top CEOs in the country for over a decade, it is that they are experts at setting boundaries. Ever try to get into a CEO’s calendar? Think they only became inaccessible after becoming a CEO? Nope. Most execs are quite inaccessible for things that won’t move the needle for their business, career, health or wealth.

If you find yourself struggling to create boundaries and actually stick to them (speaking from experience as someone who had to develop this skill..), below are a few things that work well for me, my clients, and female executive leaders I have been fortunate to shadow.

  1. Learn to Say 'No': Recognize the power of saying 'No'. While it may seem unnatural and counterintuitive at first, declining non-essential tasks allows you to channel your efforts toward projects that will actually contribute in a meaningful way to the business you manage, and your career. Prioritize your time for maximum impact. Don’t accept every meeting, every random drop-in, and every small project that comes your way. By saying ‘NO’ to the distractions, you are actually saying ‘YES’ to a thriving career.

  2. Master Delegation: Acknowledge that you can't do it all. Ah! So hard for the high-achieving type A corporate leaders. The most effective leaders surround themselves with capable teams that run well without their heavy involvement. Delegate tasks that don't require your unique skill set, freeing up your time for strategic thinking and decision-making — the hallmark of executive leadership.

  3. Establish Clear Communication: It’s uncomfortable but you have to get comfortable with communicating your boundaries to your co-workers, manager, their admin, and your team. Express your availability and limitations openly and assertively. This one takes some practice, but I promise you once you have done it a few times, it becomes second nature. It also helps to foster a culture of respect, prevents burnout, and ensures others understand and appreciate your needs at work.

  4. Invest in Self-Care: The road to senior level roles and the executive suite is a marathon, not a sprint. Prioritize self-care to maintain your physical and mental well-being - whatever that looks like for you. Regularly schedule time for activities that recharge you, whether it's actually taking your lunch break (highly recommended), exercise, watching YouTube videos, or spending quality time with your loved ones.

Let your ability to set clear boundaries at work be your secret weapon on your path to career and executive success!
